The through-line: the commercialization gap

If there is one idea that connects everything in this dossier, it is the commercialization gap — the distance between a technology that works in a laboratory and a product that survives in a market. My work is a sustained, hands-on investigation of that gap: not as a metaphor, but as a set of coupled, concrete barriers that a venture must clear together or not at all.

  • Feedstock — securing a reliable, affordable input stream, often from residues nobody else wanted.
  • Capital — assembling equity, grants, and soft funding across the “valley of death” between proof and profit.
  • Certification — meeting the standards (fuel, carbon, lifecycle) that turn a product into a tradable, trusted commodity.
  • First-of-a-kind deployment — getting a real customer to run the technology at real scale, with all the risk that entails.

I have cleared all four in practice, and now study and teach the crossing.
